UPDATE: A $10 million rooftop open-air beach club under construction in Surfers Paradise will have a five-star Japanese restaurant, beach volleyball space, a glass elevator, four pools and bars galore.
Artesian Hospitality, the operator behind the ambitious visitor-magnet project Cali Beach Club, unveiled fresh details at the official launch on Wednesday morning at its nearby existing venue White Rhino.
Artesian managing partner Matt Keegan said the fourth-floor site - on the corner of Surfers Paradise Boulevard and Elkhorn Avenue - would be home to high-end Japanese restaurant Kyoto with sweeping ocean views, a giant sand area for beach volleyball, sun-baking and other leisure activities plus an open-air cinema.
A feature glass elevator enabling patrons to enjoy views on the way up would also be a feature.
Cali would have four pools spanning more than 400 square metres, day beds, bars and luxury cabanas each with personalised wait service day and night.
The four pools would spectacularly illuminate as would the rest of club at night, he said.
“It is not just a restaurant, it is not just a bar - it’s an entire precinct,” Mr Keegan told those at the launch.
The construction bill is estimated at $5-$7 million with an all up cost of about $10 million.
Mayor Tom Tate said he was impressed by the size at 5000 square metres: “An acre is 4000. It’s a real precinct.”
He recalled Gold Coast pioneers Jim Cavill and Russ Hinze and the city’s “have a go” spirit saying: “Matt putting this out there is the same have a go spirit”, adding it a was a great long-term investment in the “future of Surfers Paradise”.
Destination Gold Coast chairman Paul Donovan said when Mr Keegan had first outlined the plans to him some months earlier he was “absolutely blown away”.
“It’s what the city needs. We need the night economy and we need new experiences during the day where we can send the high-spending visitors.”
It’s understood the Cali construction is on track for completion within months if not earlier.
EARLIER: A $10 million rooftop beach club and leisure precinct for 2000 people under construction in Australia’s tourism capital the Gold Coast is tipped to be a visitation magnet.
The giant open-air entertainment venue across 5000 square metres – by Gold Coast operator Artesian Hospitality – will feature beach-edge pools, VIP cabanas, a new world-class restaurant with ocean views plus other premium dining outlets, bars and an open-air cinema.
A beach volleyball area is also understood to be part of the plans for what will be known as Cali Beach Club.
It is on track for completion in early 2021 and aims to tap into Australia’s pent-up demand for beach holidays as borders reopen internally. But the venue is understood to not just have captured the imagination of city leaders crying out for fresh new visitor infrastructure but also Australian tourism marketing officials luring international visitation when overseas travel resumes.
In an exclusive preview before its official unveiling on Wednesday to city and tourism leaders, it can be revealed more than 150 construction jobs will be created plus a further 160 ongoing on completion.

It will occupy the entire fourth-floor roof of a corner site in central Surfers Paradise, bordering Elkhorn Avenue and Surfers Paradise Boulevard.
In a statement, Artesian Hospitality – which operates nearby nightclubs and bars Sin City, The Bedroom, Havana and White Rhino – said Cali Beach Club would be “unlike any other venue in Australia and is certain to entice and delight both locals and tourists”.
“The Gold Coast will soon boast a slick, sophisticated and sassy new playground capturing all the best features of our unique city. Not one, but four large beach-edged pools, VIP cabanas, a world-class restaurant with ocean views, premium dining outlets, multiple bars, sports facilities and much more. Welcome to Cali Beach Club.
“The brand-new entertainment destination boasts a spectacular outlook over Surfers Paradise beach and unparallel views of the Surfers Paradise skyline. Day or night, it is simply breathtaking,” the statement said.
Artesian Hospitality managing partner Matthew Keegan added: “Cali Beach Club marks the start of something special for entertainment offerings of its kind in Queensland, and Australia in general.
“As a company, we have a mantra to lead, not just follow. Cali Beach Club is a complete testament to our commitment to bring unique venues to life that will ensure our customers’ expectations are not just met but exceeded.
“Our aim is to deliver a luxury hospitality experience that will surpass anything currently available in Australia and I am totally confident that we will achieve that aim. Australia, come relax, eat, drink, play and embrace life at Cali Beach Club.”
Mr Keegan will unveil the plans on site on Wednesday alongside Mayor Tom Tate, Destination Gold Coast chairman Paul Donovan and Surfers Paradise councillor Darren Taylor.
