SCHOOLIES can drink safely and without fear of being spiked thanks to a pair of Gold Coast students.

Bond University business students Rosanna Relton and Johnny Henwood have created a silicone cover called Drink Safe — inspired by a children’s sippy cup and other silicone-stretch food containers — to wrap across most drinking glasses.

The silicone would help to prevent drink spiking and spillage.

Ms Relton said their clever invention was especially aimed at Schoolies.

“That’s a key market and people vulnerable to having their drinks spiked,” she said.

“I was having a conversation about clubbing with some classmates and I had seen an ad for a silicon stretch food container and I thought, wouldn’t it be good to put that over a cup?

“I found there was a similar product around for kids with sippy cups so that made the process easier. I did some research into manufacturing, and now we have a team of 10 working on it.”

Mr Henwood said when the team spoke to 50 people, all had either had their own drinks spiked, or knew someone who had been spiked.

The Drink Safe covers cost $5 each, or three for $12. They are dishwasher safe, reusable and can be sterilised.

Money raised will be donated to Red Frogs, who support students during the annual event.
