Bernard Tomic attacked

Bernard Tomic says “it’s so funny” to see video circulating of him being attacked by two men in Surfers Paradise, claiming it was years ago and he has no idea why it’s surfaced now.

Shock footage went viral online on Friday showing two men standing over the former world number 17, kicking him and trying to stomp him. The tennis star was prone on the ground.

Tomic desperately tries to defend himself, covering his head in the 16-second fracas before one of the men picks him up, telling him to “get up ya dog”.

In his first words on the footage, a relaxed and smiling Tomic told his Instagram followers on Saturday night: “Hello everyone - hope everyone is doing well.

“I’m here in Istanbul, Turkey, flying to USA. I haven’t been on Instagram for a couple of months and I thought I would jump on and talk about this video that has been circulating.

“Heh - it’s so funny because that happened five or six years ago. So I have no idea why this is all going on now. I hope everyone is doing well - and, yah, peace.”

The fight footage is filmed outside a tattoo parlour down what’s known as the Forum arcade just off Surfers Paradise party strip Orchid Avenue.

Queensland Police have said whilst aware of the video no formal complaint had been made about it and they were unaware of the date.

Tomic has spent the past 18 months playing on the lower levels of the tennis pro tour, building his ranking back up from 825 to 292.

Tomic, in an exclusive sitdown with the Bulletin before going back on the pro tour at the start of 2022, said he had one final shot at salvaging his career.

At the time, he admitted he had come close to quitting tennis for good, regretted a lot of “dumb s--- he had said to media, and was “kind of bored” of “outside distractions” that had impacted his tennis career.

“One of my goals is to finish off right. And retire happy. So we’ll see,” he said at the time.

He’s been grinding on the tour’s lower levels ever since, mainly on the Challenger Tour where there are few perks and prizemoney barely covers the cost of touring.

When 18, Tomic became the youngest Wimbledon quarter-finalist since three-time champion Boris Becker. Tomic has earned about $9 million in prizemoney during his career.
