AWL’s black out sale on dark coloured dogs and cats is aimed to get homes for animals who spend too long in the shelter

BLACK cats are supposed to be bad luck, but this weekend they (and their dark coloured canine friends) will be priced to clear at the Gold Coast AWL.

THE Animal Welfare League of Queensland is hoping to change the luck of black and brown pets struggling to get the attention of potential owners this week by launching a new marketing initiative.

The AWLQ has launched a “black out” sale to promote the cause of dogs and cats spending too long in its shelters.

More than 40 black and brown animals are looking for a home at Coombabah shelter and until Sunday cats are being offered for $35 and dogs for $95.

AWLQ communications manager Brooke Whitney said black and brown pets were often the last to go from shelters and research showed it was probably because they did not stand out.

“It is not ideal for them,” she said.

“We end up with a whole lot of darker animals and can’t take new animals that need help.”

There are also theories that people fear black dogs and cats because black dogs are often portrayed as aggressive in film and on television, while black cats are associated with bad luck and evil.

The sale goes until Sunday.
