A surfing legend has shared the terrifying moment he had to get out of the water, saying “the ocean let me have this one”.
Gold Coast surfer and former world champion Joel Parkinson posted a nail-biting video to Instagram after a surfing scare at Snapper Rocks on Thursday.
The video showed him inching closer to sharp rocks before he was able to get himself on top of the rocks as waves were smashing.
Towards the end of the video, Parkinson had his hands on his knees and was taking deep breaths.
“Never underestimate the power of the ocean, even at your local,” he captioned the video.
“All it took was my wedding ring. Sorry babe, the ocean let me have this one.
“Hopefully you will be as kind.”
Three-time world champion surfer Mick Fanning commented on his video and said “very lucky there mate”.
Another commenter said “the ocean does not respect world champions” and Parkinson replied “hard to tell her that when you’re gasping for air”.
Surfers rushed out to the swell on Thursday after a strong south to south easterly wind hammered the Gold Coast.
Weather forecasting Facebook page Higgins Storm Chasing said winds up to 70km/h were likely across coastal areas.
They said winds were tipped to ease on Friday but it would still be “gusty” in the morning. .
