Police allege he punched his de facto partner in the head as she slept, and strangled her to the point she thought it was “the end” after an earlier argument at Burleigh Heads on October 28 last year.

Spence told her “say goodnight forever”, police allege.

It’s alleged the victim could feel her head filling up with blood, and her eyes felt like they were going to pop.

A month earlier police allege Spence threw a ladder at his partner causing a gash to her head.

He is also accused of punching her in the mouth when driving on June 6.

Spence applied for bail through his solicitor, Dave Garratt, of Howden Saggers Lawyers, in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday. The application was opposed by the prosecution.

Mr Garratt described the case against his client as “weak”. Police say there is photographs of the alleged injuries.

Mr Garratt told the court Spence would be contesting the allegations.

Spence, who has been in custody since June, was granted bail with a string of conditions. He must wear a GPS tracker, report to Bribie Island police three times a week, and his stepfather must pay a $10,000 surety.

The matter was adjourned until September 25.
