A FORMER scaffolder choked his partner of seven months until she almost passed out – after an argument about a lighter.

Adriano Corapi also punched the woman in the stomach as she tried to get away from the tent they were staying in at Burleigh Heads about 1am on October 23 last year.

Nearly two months earlier, Corapi stomped on her head, punched her in the face and tried to bite her. He then stole $750 she had been saving for her son’s birthday.

A day later he came back to her Gold Coast home and hit her in the wrist and leg with his skateboard.

Corapi pleaded guilty in the Southport District Court on Wednesday to 13 charges including strangulation, assault occasioning bodily harm and stealing.

Judge Geraldine Dann sentenced Corapi to three months’ prison with immediate release on parole. He had spent 343 days in custody.

“Women are not chattels,” she told Corapi.

“You don’t own them, you can’t control them and you certainly can’t master them by physical violence.”

Defence barrister Nick McGee, instructed by Bamberry Lawyers, said Corapi had dealt with drug use in the months leading up to the attacks.

“He has feelings of sadness, guilt and hopelessness in terms of drug use and the offences he committed,” he said.

Mr McGhee said Corapi had lengthy periods of no offending.
