The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

One of three men charged over an alleged joy ride in a stolen luxury car will have his case back in court in late September.

Yager D-Vos Kururangi, 22, is charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and breaching bail.

During a mention in the Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday, the Southport man’s matter was adjourned to September 29.

He was remanded in custody. Police allege Kururangi was one of five people who stole a 2008 BMW 118L from the car park of Pacific Fair in Broadbeach on August 17.

Police claim the car was unsecured with the keys inside.Authorities began tracking the car that night after reports it was driving dangerously and erratically.

The car was abandoned in parkland near Nielsens Rd, Carrara, after police deployed tire spikes.

They alleged the occupants of the car fled the scene. Police dog Raptor and his handler tracked three of the five people, including Kururangi, about 200 metres from the car.

On August 18, Kururangi’s co-accused, Wade Patrick Kavanagh, was granted bail with a number of conditions after being charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

NAMED: Accused stolen luxury car joyrider faces court - August 18

A man accused of taking a stolen luxury car for a joy ride from a shopping centre car park has been granted bail, despite failing to appear in court three times for unrelated charges.

The Southport Magistrates Court was also told Wade Patrick Kavanagh was on bail and probation for charges in NSW and is facing two other charges of alleged unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The magistrate warned the 25-year-old was “running out of time” but was satisfied the “risk of granting bail can be sufficiently ameliorated by conditions”. They include living with his mother.

Police allege Kavanagh was one of five people who stole a 2008 BMW 118L from the carpark of Pacific Fair in Broadbeach about 4am Wednesday. Police claim the car was unsecured with the keys inside.

Police allege Kavanagh was a passenger in the stolen vehicle and fled the scene. Police dog Raptor and his handler tracked three of the five people about 200 metres from the car. The two others remained on the run.

Kavanagh, of Nerang, applied for bail via videolink after he received a fresh charge of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Earlier, he was convicted and fined $900 for three fail-to-appear charges.

Police opposed him being granted bail, arguing he was a “high risk” of offending and failing to appear in court.

Magistrate Louisa Pink said although Kavanagh had a lengthy NSW criminal history, he had no history in Queensland apart from the fail to appears.

“The question is whether you should be locked up now to stop you from committing further offences,” she said.

“In all the circumstances, I’m satisfied on this occasion that the risk of granting bail can be sufficiently ameliorated by conditions.”

Magistrate Pink told Kavanagh he was “running out of time”.

“If you want to go to jail, fine and good, because that’s where you’re heading,” she said.

“The court is not going to cop continued charges of committing criminal offences.”

Kavanagh was granted bail on a number of conditions, including he remain living with his mother in Nerang, be on curfew between 8pm and 6am and report regularly to police.

His matter was adjourned to September 14.

A co-accused, Yager D-Vos Kururangi, 22, did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until August 31.

The third man arrested, an 18-year-old from Nerang, was also charged with one count of unlawful use of motor vehicle. He was granted police bail and will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on August 30.
