Tropical Cyclone Seth wreaks havoc in Queensland

A dramatic beach rescue has unfolded at Surfers Paradise after two men ran into trouble after entering the ocean.

Police said emergency services were called to Surfers Paradise about 7pm Sunday following reports two men were “screaming out for help” while more than 50m out from the shore.

Paramedics assessed them at 7.15pm and they “appeared to be fine”, a police spokeswoman said.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said two men in their late teens were taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in stable conditions after they were reportedly caught in a rip.

The close-call follows a string of beach tragedies on the Gold Coast.

A man drowned while boogie boarding after hitting a sandbank and going into cardiac arrest on Wednesday at Coolangatta.

It followed last month’s tragedy in which talented young jockey Chris Caserta drowned at Surfers Paradise after being swept out to sea in a late-night swim.

A three-year-old boy also died in a Christmas Eve tragedy at Labrador’s Ian Dipple Lagoon.

National drownings increased 20 per cent up to 294 deaths in 2021.

Sixty six of those deaths were in Queensland, and 99 in New South Wales.

In total there were 968 drowning incidents, 674 were non-fatal.
