More than 100 students have been sworn in as the Gold Coast’s newest Junior Council – now they’ve named their 2020 Junior Mayor.

A MIAMI High School student is the city’s new Junior Mayor.
Narii Hamill Salmon, 16, was one of 120 students from 30 schools sworn in yesterday as part of the city’s 2020 Junior Council.
Rivermount College student Holly Hudson was named Deputy Junior Mayor.
The pair, along with six other executive Junior Council members, will lead the group in providing input into city planning, programs and services over the next year.
“Overall, I’d like to be focused on young people and how we can make our voices heard,” Narii said.
“Specifically, I’m very focused on environment, things like climate change and ensuring we are able to stand up for our future.”

This is the 27th Junior Council committee. The program start with just a handful of schools in 1993.
Mayor Tom Tate attended yesterday’s ceremony and congratulated the students on their new position.
“It’s always wonderful to see our Junior Council out there, it’s quite uplifting,” he said.
“We see things in different ways at different ages, and under our youth program we invite the next generation to come up with other ideas.
“For example IT, it’s not in our era to think laterally in that sphere, so we look at them to go ‘this is what we should do, this is how we make the city better, especially for the youth’.”
The other members of the 2020 Junior Council executive are:

* Kyan Mehrotra – Southport State High School.
* Sakhi Tidyman – Miami State High School.
* Ryden Camara – Benowa State High School.
* Hannah Kennedy – Somerset College.
* Naughton Lovell – Queensland Academies – Health Sciences Campus.
