Newtown & Chilwell’s dominance in the contest during the Eagles’ big win over Bell Park was obvious in the stat sheets, with the premiership contender recording five of the top seven disposal winners for the entire round.

Star Eagle Matt Boag, who is a chance to take home a Mathieson Medal in 2023, led the competition with Supersaints skipper Jacob Russell on 42 disposals.

VFL-listed gun Matty Lloyd also cracked 40 touches for the Eagles, while Liam Nash had 38 touches, Charlie Byrne had his best game of the season with 37 touches and Blake Sutterby cracked 35 disposals.

It became the first time in GFL since stats were recorded that five players from the same team had 35 touches or more in one game.

The closest any team came to that record was Colac in round 4, 2022, when Ben McCarthy (33), Lachlan Simpkin (33), Darcy Lang (31) and Jon Simpkin (31) all had 30+ disposals.

Russell, who tied Boag for 42 disposals, cracked 40+ touches for just the second time in his GFL career in the drought-breaking victory for St Albans over Lara.

But Boag also led the competition in clearances with 11, ahead of Lara’s Bayley Cockerill, Leopold’s Marcus Thompson and Grovedale pair Ryan Abbott and Cassidy Parish, who all had 10 each.

Boag also topped the competition in the tackle count, tied with Joeys star Lewis Antonac on 10 for the round, while Geelong West’s Emmanuel Ajang had nine.

Leopold’s Trent West recorded 58 hit outs to lead the competition for the round, with Grovedale’s Ryan Abbott and St Albans’ Nathan Cole both recording 42.

South Barwon’s Fraser Fort’s haul of six goals led the competition alongside Sam Dobson, who also booted six majors on Sunday.

Leopold’s Connor Giddings, Grovedale’s Mitch Chafer, South Barwon’s Andrew Boseley and Newtown & Chilwell’s Euriah Hollard kicked five majors each.
