Inverleigh has won an important finals-defining clash over Bannockburn, just days after locking in its new coach for 2024.

Incoming Inverleigh coach Chris Moore says a solidifying win over Bannockburn was as important a victory as they come in the run home for finals.

The Hawks trailed by three goals at quarter time but piled on 12 to four goals after the first break to win comfortably, 15.17 (107) to 10.5 (65).

With the victory keeping Inverleigh in touch with Bell Post Hill in second and equal on points with East Geelong, Moore said every game was feeling like a final as the club aimed to hold onto a top three spot.

“At the halfway point of the year we looked at it and realised essentially we have to win nine games in a row to be in the top three,” he said.

“That’s just how it worked out for us after our start to the year, so the game against Bannockburn was really important, so was the game against Thomson and East Geelong.

“The effort was really good from the group, we were really pleased with the result but that top three spot isn’t locked in yet.”

The club announced Moore would be taking over the coaching duties from Adam Donohue at the end of the season, with the former Anakie coach earning the promotion from an assistant role at the Hawks.

He confirmed the club was looking for a co-coach to work alongside in 2024.

Moore, who is signed on for one season, said he hoped Donohue would stay at the club as a player in 2024.

“We haven’t had a conversation about what next year looks like just yet, the playing group was told on Thursday that I’d be taking over,” he said.

“So there hasn’t been much time to lock everything in, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind couple of days.

“But in the coming weeks we’ll sit down and talk about what he wants to do but hopefully he wants to stay around the club and play on, he’s still one of the best players in the competition.”
