A man who was found dead at the Geelong waterfront on the weekend is being remembered for his “big smile” and “infectious laugh”.

Mark Allwood, 43, was found by passers-by in Corio Bay about 7am Sunday.

His older brother, Wayne Allwood, described Mark as a “gentle giant”.

“He had a heart of gold,” he said.

“He always had a big smile on his face.”

While it is unknown exactly where Mark’s body was found, police cordoned off a stretch near Eastern Beach Rd, between Fishermen’s Pier restaurant and Stoney Pier Lane.

Mark was born in Mildura and was raised in Geelong.

Wayne said his brother loved having fun on two wheels, whether that be motorcycles or dirt bikes, and camping.

The pair had a serious dirt bike crash more than 20 years ago in the Otways, near Winchelsea.

“We drove ourselves to hospital though, we managed to get in the car and get to the local hospital,” Wayne said.

“He had a broken arm and my jaw was broken in several spots.

“They pulled my front teeth out of his head.

“We recovered and a few months later we were back out there.”

Wayne said his brother was an exceptionally good cook.

“He loved making mashed spuds, he thought he had perfected his recipe,” he said.

“He would eat a big pot of mashed potatoes because he was a big boy.”

Mark also had a great singing voice, Wayne said.

“He won a (high school) competition when he was young when he sung Knocking on Heaven’s Door (by Guns N’ Roses),” he said.

“It caught us all by surprise, we didn’t know he had such a great singing voice.”

Wayne said his brother was going through a “rough time” in recent years.

“He was struggling and going through a bad time,” he said.

“We think he might have been sleeping rough.

“He spent some time in jail and when he got out, he never really recovered.

“He was a bit of a lost soul.”

Police on Tuesday confirmed the exact circumstances surrounding Mark’s death were yet to be determined but are not believed to be suspicious.

Wayne said family want to remember Mark “for his happy times”.

“He had an infectious laugh and a beautiful smile and that’s the Mark we want to remember,” he said.
