Large parts of a popular party strip in Geelong have been cordoned off as the homicide squad investigates the death of a man following a stabbing.

Officers at the scene where the Corio man, 20, was allegedly stabbed have described it as a “huge crime scene”.

Police confirmed they rushed to Little Malop St about 5.30am on Sunday after reports of a man having been stabbed.

The 20-year-old Corio resident was rushed to Geelong hospital in a critical condition.

But all help was to no avail.

He was declared dead at the hospital.

Little Malop St was closed off from James St all the way to the Princes Hwy and La Trobe Tce was closed off from Little Malop to Ryrie streets.

Blood stains could be scene on the intersection of Little Malop and La Trobe streets and outside the NDIS offices.

Forensic teams were at the scene as police directed foot and vehicle traffic away from the area.

A police spokeswoman confirmed detectives are now investigating the case.

“Homicide squad detectives are investigating the stabbing in Geelong this morning,” she said.

The spokeswoman said investigators believed the 20-year-old Corio man sustained the injury during a nearby fight.

“It is understood two other men involved in the altercation self-presented at a hospital and are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries,” she said.

Other than the police presence, the city centre resembled a ghost town on Sunday morning.

Isabella, who works at a cafe on Little Malop St said she was shocked to see the crime scene when she arrived for work just after 7am.

“It’s a sad day for everyone,” she said.

“It’ll be hard to get people in to the CBD today.”

Paramedics also confirmed they treated a man in his 20s for upper body injuries.

They said he was taken to Geelong hospital in a critical condition.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unknown and investigations remain ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information which could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

More to come.
