Police are investigating a suspicious car fire in Belmont.
The blaze happened about 3.30am Monday beneath the Moorabool St bridge, which links South Geelong and Belmont.
A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesman said crews responded to calls from triple-0 just before 3.40am about a car on fire.
“Fire crews arrived at the scene located underneath the … bridge within minutes to extinguish the flames,” the spokesman said.
“Firefighters had the incident under control by 3.50am.
“The scene was handed over to Victoria Police.”
Victoria Police Leading Senior Constable Jody Clayton said no one was in the car at the time of the fire.
“The fire appears to be suspicious, and the investigation remains ongoing,” she said.
The blackened, burnt out sedan could be seen under the bridge on Monday morning.
A number of significant blazes have occurred in the region in recent weeks.
It comes after an abandoned house in Norlane sustained extensive damage after it caught fire early last week.
Anyone with information, or witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
