Scary Ryrie St bus crash near Geelong High School leaves four in hospital

A bus wreaked havoc, narrowly missing a performing arts centre, before blowing into traffic lights after it is understood the driver had a medical episode.

Multiple people have been taken away in ambulances after a horror bus crash outside an East Geelong school.

A McHarry’s bus ploughed through multiple trees along Ryrie St near Geelong High School heading towards Portarlington about 6.10pm.

The bus narrowly missed the Shenton Performing Arts Theatre at the intersection with Garden St, before taking out a set of traffic lights and a power pole.

It was a dramatic scene, with multiple people taken away via ambulance.

The extent of their injuries are at this stage unknown.

It occurred right near Geelong High School about 6.10pm.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman confirmed four people had been taken to Geelong hospital.

Police and other emergency vehicles were also on scene.

The state of the driver is unknown, with multiple people speculating he had a medical episode.

A local resident who was one of the first scene described the intersection as “notoriously dangerous”.

“It wasn’t that long ago that there was another crash and I had to get a child out of the car,” she said.

An Ocean Grove man who was driving into the city said people were told that the crash had brought down power lines that remained live for some time, delaying rescue efforts.

Powercor workers were on hand, with many people left without power.

One resident was told they wouldn’t have power until at least 11.30pm.
