Bannockburn man Jesse Brooks pleads guilty to aggravated burglary

A violent attacker who sent his victim to hospital in a horror home invasion was heard boasting about the attack. Here is what he said.

A Bannockburn dad smashed his way into a North Geelong home and beat another man in the head with a steel pole in a targeted attack, a court heard.

Jesse Brooks, 27, knew the victim and broke into his unit with the intention of assaulting him.

He later boasted to a friend that he had “dealt with him”.

The victim was so badly injured he was rushed to hospital with cuts to his head and a stab wound and needed plastic surgery.

Brooks pleaded guilty in Geelong County Court on Monday to aggravated burglary with an offensive weapon and causing injury intentionally.

The court heard Brooks and an unknown co-offender smashed their way into the house while armed with a steel pole about 9.45pm on January 19 last year.

The victim heard the window shatter and ran to his bedroom to escape his attackers.

He tried to barricade his bedroom door with a cabinet, but Brooks climbed over and reached the victim.

Crown prosecutor Daryl Brown said Brooks repeatedly struck the victim to the head, neck and shoulders with the steel pole.

Mr Brown said the victim felt like Brooks wanted to kill him.

The victim also suffered a cut to the forehead, a haematoma, swelling and stab wound to the right forearm, two scalp haematomas and swollen and bruised ankles.

He was taken to the operating theatre to have his wounds cleaned and repaired by a plastic surgery team.

About 10 minutes after the incident, Brooks visited a friend at a unit in Coxon Pde in North Geelong and told the woman she would no longer have problems with the victim because he had “dealt with him”.

A few weeks later, Brooks was at a house with the same woman and was overheard continually asking her if the victim was OK.

Brooks was arrested by police on February 8, 2022 and later charged.

His lawyer told the court Brooks had been using drugs since the age of 13 and was intellectually disabled.

Brooks, who has been remanded in custody, will be sentenced at a later date.
