Driver in hospital after ramming parked car and taking out a power pole in Southport

A man is in police custody after a dramatic crash on the Gold Coast that destroyed a power pole.

A MAN is in police custody after a dramatic crash outside the Woolworths at the Smith Street Collective in Southport, destroying a power pole.

A motorist allegedly continuously rammed into a parked yellow car just before 10am on Tuesday at Village Bvd, and moments later hit the power pole.

Mitchell Pratt, 23, from Molendinar was on his way to work when he saw a car driving erratically.

Mr Pratt said he saw a car turn onto Smith Street and almost hit multiple objects before turning onto Village Bvd.

“I boxed him in from behind with the yellow car and managed to stop him from going anywhere,” he said.

Mr Pratt said he called the police when he had boxed the car in and said two men jumped out and fled on foot before the driver picked up speed and ran into the pole.

“He managed to push the yellow car 90 degrees and got about 30 more metres and decided to roll his car,” he said.

Nearby worker Vanessa Gushiken from Cafe 63 heard the crash and said her customers ran over to the scene to help.

“Luckily one of our customers was a paramedic so they were straight over there and a few others went to help her out,” she said.

Duty Office of the Gold Coast Police Todd Miller said police first went to the incident with reports of a traffic hazard and on their way to the job another call came in about a single vehicle traffic accident.

“Upon arrival police found a silver sedan on its side that had taken down the power pole,” he said.

“Police arrested a local man in relation to reckless driving and he’s currently at the Gold Coast Hospital undergoing compulsory blood testing to see if he was under the influence of drugs.”

Another vehicle crashed into a power pole in Runaway Bay at 1.40pm with the driver taken to Gold Coast Hospital in a stable condition by paramedics.

Queensland Police weren’t required to attend the scene and no other vehicles were affected by the crash.
