THE Government is heading in the right direction to solve the youth crime crisis on the Coast according to Police Minister Mark Ryan, who was in the city yesterday to spruik a new police building and talk up 20 news cops in the region.

It comes after the Bulletin reported a number of violent robberies across the Gold Coast in the past month, including bashings for brand named clothes and mobile phones, along with an alleged gay bashing at Coomera Westfield this month.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said the work being done to break the cycle of offending among young people was working across the Coast.

“The police won’t ever give up on this issue, the police will continue to not only respond to instances of crime and catch those people who are committing crime, but also do that community safety work to break the cycle of criminal offending.

“The community expects that there is a consequence for people breaking the law, when it comes to young offenders, there has to be consequence, but there has to also be those interventions to break the cycle.”

He said working closely with other services would help end the cycle of offending.

“More and more we are working closer and closer together and the police will tell you this over the last few years the number of agencies that have come together and are working on common problems together to come up with common solutions is growing.

“This is important work police can’t do on their own, no Government agency can do on their own.”

Assistant Commissioner Wilkins said the 20 new officers would be here by the end of this financial year and would come with new police cars and other resources for the district as well.

“There are significant pressure points across the northern corridor and that’s why in consultation with my district officer, that those entire 20 police are going to the northern corridor, with 14 to Coomera and six to Nerang,” Mr Wilkins said.

“20 is what we’ve got and it will provide a significant increase to manage our demand for service delivery.”

The minister along with Gaven MP Meaghan Scanlon and police looked through the soon to be completed Arundel Police hub, set to house the Rapid Action Patrol group and the dog squad.

“This facility is going to be a game changer for the Gold Coast,” Ms Scanlon said.

“It’s means where we’re going to see more police throughout our communities, particularly in the north, because they have better access to the M1.”

The new building is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
