A MAN stabbed four times by a stranger on a Gold Coast bus this week plans to return to work today.

Keagan Weetman says he was going home after his first day at a new job on Monday when he was randomly knifed in the shoulder, face and hand in Varsity Lakes.

The offender, who is still on the run, got away with Mr Weetman’s Gucci bag. However, the 20-year-old says it was a fake.

“He robbed me for something he thought was $4000 but was only worth $100.”

Mr Weetman, who works for a superannuation firm, underwent surgery for minor tendon damage to a finger, but considers himself “very lucky”.

The Bulletin has learned the offender also threatened to stab the bus driver if he did not delete CCTV footage of the attack and yelled “this is my area dog”.

Keagan Weetman is now speaking with police.

Speaking for the first time, Mr Weetman says he feels sorry for the bus driver, wasn’t angry with the man who attacked him as he’s probably a drug addict, and is sad for his mother because she worked “three jobs” to get him the bag, sunglasses and Bluetooth headphones that were stolen for Christmas.

However, the former Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School student refused to talk about the stabbing itself because he says he has not yet given a statement to police. Mr Weetman was allegedly involved in a dangerous driving matter late last year and he “did not want to get in more trouble”.

Mr Weetman believes the spate of knife attacks on the Gold Coast recently is linked to the “drill rap” music kids are listening to.

“Drill rap that has come through has been inspiring all these crimes. All these younger kids, when they are still under the influence of things like music, games and TV, are hearing music about stabbing people and talking about doing this and that.

“They just think it is OK and I think there is an increase in under-aged stabbings.”

Two Gold Coast teenagers have died from knife attacks in the past six months, and last week a 13-year-old was stabbed during a group fight in Robina.

Asked if was angry about what happened to him, Mr Weetman said: “Not really. Like, I mean, obviously there is a reason he has done it. He might owe money to a drug dealer or he might be trying to get his next hit. Drug addiction is a disease.”

Teenager charged with Gold Coast stabbing murder

At a press conference on Tuesday, Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn said: “After the attack the offender fled from the bus with the victim’s backpack, south along Yodelay Street,” he said.

“He was a caucasian male in his early 20s, wearing a green-and-white-stripped collar, long-sleeve shirt, khaki-coloured pants, and black Nike type thongs.”

Police yesterday that investigations into the Varsity Lakes assault were continuing.

A Surfside Buslines spokesperson said they were assisting Queensland Police.

“Everyone has the right to feel safe on public transport and we are deeply saddened by this incident,” they said.

“We commend our experienced driver who was quick to assist and notify emergency services. Our thoughts are with the young man and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
