The cow has been rescued, but the mystery behind who stole it — and why — remains open after a famous Coast landmark was found on the side of a busy road this morning.

A cow statue, stolen from Cav’s Steakhouse in Labrador earlier this week, was found lying on the side of the road in Labrador this morning.

The statue was spotted by passers by on the Gold Coast Highway — just 200m from the restaurant.

Cav’s butcher Michael Johnson said the fibreglass statue it is now safe and secure back at the restaurant.

“She is safely home now and is in good condition. There is no damage to it,” Mr Johnson said.

CAV’S STEAKHOUSE COW STOLEN BY THIEVES IN LATE NIGHT RAID

It is believed the statue, one of three which have sat outside the popular steakhouse for more than 35 years, was taken between Sunday night and this morning.

Mr Johnson said that while there was no evidence left behind by the cow rustler, witnesses reported seeing a man walking with the statue nearby late on Sunday night.

It was the second time in just three months a cow has been stolen from the restaurant after one of the fibreglass creatures was taken late one night in December.

Fortunately it was found in a nearby street the next morning.

“It does seem to be a common trend,” Mr Johnson said.

“People most likely leave Surfers Paradise with a gut full of alcohol and are still up for a bit of fun. The cows are quite heavy and always seem to be found within a close distance of the restaurant once the joke wears off.”

Mr Johnson said he will be looking at increased security measures for the statues to deter any more would-be thieves.

The Frank Street steakhouse is expected to be demolished in the near future to make way for a mid-rise tower project which will incorporate a new restaurant.

The cows are expected to be put into storage during construction and brought out once the tower is completed.
