The Twomey Schriber Thunder claimed their first win of the Barrier Reef Big Bash with a 36-run victory over the Designer First Homes Dare Devils thanks to some tight bowling from Jordan Fulton.

The Thunder posted the biggest total of the tournament so far on the back of some powerful hitting from at least four batsman, with Dan Parnell (22), Andrew Phelps (30), Paul Nasser (31) and Tom Maher (21) all making worthy contributions.

Dare Devils skipper Brenton Edwards (4-34) and experienced offspinner James How (3-20) were strong with the ball.

Edwards got the Dare Devils off to fast start in pursuit of the Thunder’s total, rocketing his way to 22 off 15 before holing out to Jacob Stanton off the bowling of Nasser.

Josh Chadwick did his best to give his side a fighting chance, scoring 39 runs from 46 balls, but he did not get much help from those around him, with scores of 2, 1, 3 and 2 in the middle order.

It was the tight bowling of the Thunder that secured the win, as Nasser took 2-20, Maher 1-16 and Fulton a startling 4-8 from his four overs.

SUNDAY: BADGERS v HURRICANES

The Piccones Badgers remain undefeated in the Barrier Reef Big Bash after a captain’s knock from Jake Roach propelled the side to victory over the Halpin Hurricanes

Roach came to the crease with the Badgers at 2-40 and finished the match with an unbeaten 75 from 34 balls to see his side chase down the required total for the win.

The Hurricanes posted 6-145 from their 20 overs, with opener Justin Reid (69) and Anton Booy (27) leading the way before Barry Weare (16) made a cameo late in the innings.

Badgers’ teenager Prashant Goel took handy figures of 2-16 from his two overs.

The Badgers run chase started in the worst possible way when Angus Warnock was bowled by Blake Raper on the first ball, but a 40-run partnership between Chris Adams (24) and Brett Smith (13) softened the blow, before Roach grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck.

Roach smashed eight fours and four sixes before bringing up the winning runs in the 19th over.

Brendan Nasser produced a knock for the ages to lead the Halpin Hurricanes to a nailbiting eight-wicket win over the Twomey Schriber Thunder.

The Atherton tonker smashed 10 fours and four sixes on his way to 99 not out from 76 balls and showed great poise to hit a six on the last ball to secure the victory.

Justin Reid (12), Michael Salerno (12) and Anton Booy (8*) did the rest for the Hurricanes as they successfully chased down the Thunder’s total of 8-135.

The Thunder were cruising at 1-61 after a strong start from openers Dan Parnell (19) and Darren Lees (26), but it all went pear-shaped when they lost four wickets for nine runs in the space of 12 deliveries.

Some lusty hitting from Ben Shrimpton (35 off 22) and Wade Matthews (22 off 18) helped propel the Thunder to 8-135 after 20 overs.

Tim Ward (3-22) was the pick of the Hurricanes bowlers, while the skipper Salerno did his best to put the clamps on the Thunder bats, going for just 15 runs from his four overs.

Reid wasted no time in the run chase, hitting two fours in the first over, but he was caught out off the bowling of Mulgrave teammate Matthews only a few deliveries later.

Nasser came to the crease and was patient as he picked his shots, while Salerno rotated the strike until he was run out in the 14th over, with his running between the wickets hampered by a minor ankle sprain.

After 16 overs, the Hurricanes were 2/93 and still needed 43 runs off 24 balls for victory.

Sensing it was now or never, they called their powerplay and Nasser went to work.

The experienced batsman blasted seven fours in the last four overs, before bringing up the winning runs with a maximum on the last ball.

Sean Prior was the highlight on a tough night out for the Thunder bowlers, the offspinner taking a tidy 0-14 from his four overs.

SATURDAY: BADGERS v DARE DEVILS

The Piccones Badgers remain undefeated in the Barrier Reef Big Bash after the death bowling of Will Robertson and Brodie Deverell secured a five-run victory against the Designer First Homes Dare Devils.

The Badgers chose to bat after winning the toss and got off to a great start through Atherton youngster Chris Adams (27) and classy Cassowary Coast shot-maker Rhys Camilleri (20), but it was Barron River’s Dan Freebody who made the most impact with the willow, blasting a more than a run-a-ball 36, including four fours and a six to propel his side to 8-131.

The Dare Devils were in strife at 3-23 after four overs but managed to claw their way back into the contest through a patient knock from opener Josh Chadwick (39) and a healthy cameo from Joel Sykes (21).

Chadwick (39), who almost carried his bat through the entire innings, was in the middle with Ryan Terry at the start of the 19th over, with the Dare Devils at 8-123 and needing just nine runs off 12 deliveries.

However, Badgers’ leg-spinner Robertson would take the big scalp of Chadwick three balls later, before spearhead Deverell claimed the final wicket of Ryan Terry to secure the victory in the final over.

Both bowlers had been below their best on the afternoon — Robertson went for 21 off his first three overs, while Deverell went for 27 — but skipper Jake Roach showed plenty of faith to hand them the pill at the death.

Roach (2-9) led the way for the Badgers with the ball, while Luke Corlis (1-15) and Tom Boorman (2-14) were strong for the Dare Devils.

FRIDAY: BADGERS v THUNDER

Replay: T20 Big Bash – Badgers vs Thunder

Consistent power hitting from five Piccones Badgers batsmen has powered the orange-clad side to a four-wicket win against Twomey Schriber Thunder.

The Thunder batted first, and captain Dan Parnell led the way for his team as the opener hit four boundaries and two big sixes on his way to 58 from 52 balls.

A strong 65-run opening partnership with Darren Lees got them off to a good start, but when Lees was given out lbw after a run-a-ball 24, they started to lose consistent wickets on their way to 8-130.

Angus Warnock (6) fell early for the Badgers but most of the top and middle order contributed equally.

Chris Adams had 26 (three boundaries), Jake Roach reached 25 from 15 balls, which included five boundaries, while Elliott Lovejoy brought his boomstick to smash three fours and a six on his way to 22.

But it was Cassowary Coast batsman Rhys Camilleri who stood up, hitting a patient 28 from 30 balls to guide Badgers to the four-wicket win with three overs left.
