The Designer First Homes Dare Devils might be armed with one of the deadliest batting line-ups in the inaugural Barrier Reef Big Bash, but it is an underrated bowling unit skipper Brenton Edwards believes could be his secret weapon.

The Dare Devils proved they have the firepower to blow opposition sides away in Friday night’s 12-run win against the Halpin Hurricanes at Griffiths Park.

Edwards smashed 64 off 53 balls in an unbeaten captain’s knock to fire the Dare Devils to 3-143, before the Hurricanes fell short of a rain-reduced total of 108.

The reigning Cricket Far North player of the year bludgeoned four sixes and a four in what was the first half-century of the tournament, while Josh Chadwick (25 off 36) and Tom Boorman (22 off 19) also cleared the rope.

With a stacked batting line-up, one could assume the Dare Devils might be a bit thin on the ground with the ball, but Edwards couldn’t be happier with his attack.

“We think we’ve got the squad to win the comp and we showed (on Friday) we’ve got a lot of depth,” he said.

“There were a few bowlers who didn’t get a bowl — Chaddy (Chadwick), who’s second for wickets taken in the local comp, and myself — so we’re going well.

“There’s plenty of options for me to call on in different situations, so I’m really happy with what we’ve got there.”

Edwards said Dare Devils pace bowlers Luke Corlis and Seppe Barletta proved to be a lethal combination.

The quicks opened the bowling and had the Hurricanes at 2-33 after six overs.

“When I saw Seppe’s name on the table at the auction, I knew I had to pick him up,” Edwards said.

“He’s a great bloke to have in the side. He’s very unassuming and just does his job.

“Luke bowled a really sharp spell; I’d say he’s one of the quickest in the comp.”

Both sides were eager to get on the pitch and get a result after rain threatened to jeopardise the match.

Incredibly, the match started on time and the Dare Devils could face 20 overs before rain stopped the match.

Following a short rain delay after the innings break, the Hurricanes were sent out to chase a reduced total of 108 from 14 overs.

The Barrier Reef Big Bash will go on a break for two weeks while the Cricket Far North first-grade finals play out, before returning on Friday, March 12, with the Twomey Schriber Thunder to face the Piccones Badgers at Griffiths Park from 6.30pm.
