The Rainbow Stairs are back after they were mysteriously painted again last night

A brightly coloured set of stairs that were painted over by Gold Coast City Council last week have mysteriously returned to their colourful ways overnight. But their future remains uncertain.

THE popular ‘Rainbow Stairs’ located between North Burleigh Lookout and Miami have mysteriously been repainted overnight, but their future remains uncertain.

Area councillor Pauline Young was on her morning walk when she noticed the stairs this morning.

The colourful stairs, which feature a rainbow design with a heart, were painted by an unknown member of the public late last year.

They became a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike, with photos filling up social media timelines.

However the stairs were deemed graffiti by Gold Coast City Council with staff painting them grey last week, causing outrage in the community.

Cr Young told the Bulletin on Monday she was in favour of the rainbow paint returning and would discuss it at yesterday’s first council meeting of the year.

Now the stairs have been painted again she said she would seek immediate advice from City of Gold Coast CEO Dale Dickson about what process can be put in place to retain the artwork.

“Yesterday I advised the community I wanted to see the stairway art reinstated but there is a proper process to go through for any community group, or individual, wanting to create public art in the suburbs,” Cr Young said.

“I was working towards an approved outcome for this art work but whoever is responsible has returned overnight and repainted the stairs.

“This City has spent millions battling graffiti. In the last six years, we have halved the amount of money ratepayers spend to clean up graffiti.

“In this case, I will now look to have the art work approved retrospectively but I make it clear that if an individual or group wants to create a local art piece, please go through the right channels which is to contact your local councillor.”

On Monday new graffiti was sprayed on the freshly painted grey stairs reading “eternity”.

Gold Coast City Council told the Bulletin it would be removed within 24 hours.
