MAYOR Tom Tate has called for changes to state legislation to deal with the “disgraceful” hoons who caused $4000 worth of damage at a Gold Coast running track.
Junior athletes from Gold Coast Little Athletics aged from five to 12 years old turned up to training on Saturday to find the oval at Pizzey Park destroyed by the heartless hoons.
The facility at Pizzey Drive, Miami, was covered in tyre marks and completely unusable, while pine log barriers were also damaged as the offenders gained access to the area.

“Disgraceful. That’s the only way to describe this incident,’’ Mayor Tate said.
“I’d like the offenders caught and prosecuted and the vehicle, or vehicles, involved crushed.
“I’d also like them to have to front the parents of the children who use that facility and explain why their selfish actions have damaged this community asset.’’

Mayor Tate wants changes to State legislation to make it easier for police to seize the vehicles used by offenders.
“Current legislation makes it difficult for Queensland Police to confiscate these cars and get them off the road for good,’’ he said.
“A change in State legislation - which would see the vehicle linked to the offence - would greatly assist the police to get these cars off our roads.
“The police do a brilliant job but they need that legislative backing.’’
