A NEW $600 million theme park planned for the Gold Coast is being given the tick of approval by the Chinese Government in the biggest sign yet it will go ahead.
Chinese theme park leaders Songcheng in July last year submitted a detailed development application to the Gold Coast City Council for Australian Legends World on former farmland at Nerang between the train station and Metricon Stadium.
The theme park will feature an indoor ski field, animal exhibits and adventure park along with a 3500-seat performance theatre and is expected to create thousands of jobs during its construction.
Council insiders are aware that the Chinese Government has put the project at number 11 of the top 40 it is approving around the world which “effectively gives it the green light to proceed”.
The development will need to pass all development and environmental approvals and faces a protest among residents and floodplain protectors but backers say the recent development is a “huge push for the project”.
Mayor Tom Tate told the Gold Coast Bulletin: “We’re delighted the Chinese Government has included this project on their Belt and Road list.
“Our city’s relationship with China is built on trust as well as council’s ability to minimise red tape, while still ensuring all environmental and development guidelines are adhered to. The project will still require all relevant approvals.
“I look forward to seeing this theme park development progress as it will bring significant financial and social benefits for our city.’’
