A POPULAR southern Gold Coast sculpture will be removed from the foreshore after five years.
Area councillor Gail O’Neill has revealed the damaged nail heads cannot be repaired after half a decade of exposure to the elements.
REVEALED: MAJOR EXPANSION OF COAST SHOPPING CENTRE
Cr O’Neill, posting on social media website Facebook, said the artwork had been installed for the 2013 Swell Sculpture festival after being bought by the Gold Coast City Council.
“Our unique sculptures on Kirra foreshore are unfortunately unable to be repaired,” she said.
“They were made with thin gauge steel and are corroding from the inside out.
“These sculptures that were exhibits in Swell Festival were purchased in 2013 and installed in exactly the right place to acknowledge our beautiful Kirra coastline.”

However Cr O’Neill said there was good news for fans of the sculpture.
“The good news is they were included on Council’s Asset Register & I have started the process to replace them,” she said.
“I have contacted the original artist who has assured me that he can replicate his sculpture in core steel.
“I am hoping that it won’t be too long before we will be enjoying the nails once again in all their glory.”
