THE GOLD COAST mayor’s daughter has been forced to self quarantine after A-lister Tom Hanks was diagnosed with novel coronavirus.
Mayor Tom Tate’s daughter Emily, was working on the Elvis biopic starring Mr Hanks which has been closed down since the latest case was confirmed in the early hours of this morning.
It is understood all crew members on set have been asked to self quarantine at this time.
“Tom Hanks was tested early this morning. Very early,” Cr Tate said.
“Once everyone was in, the news was delivered by (director) Baz Luhrmann himself.
“He said they were shutting down and everyone was to go home. We’ve our plans in place.
“As far as the epidemic is, stage one is the preparation. We have a lot of preparation to be done.”

Cr Tate said he was confident Mr Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson were receiving the best possible care.
He also said his daughter was in high spirits, despite being confined at home.
“I rang my daughter to see how she is. She’s at home self quarantining as well,” Cr Tate said.
“This virus is going across the globe. I say if you have good health, not senior, don’t have diabetes – you should be OK.”
Cr Tate said he believed that the Gold Coast’s film industry would recover from the shutdown and get a boost from international coverage coming from Tom Hank’s diagnosis.
“There’s two ways to look at it,” he said.
“Now everyone in New York knows we have the biopic movie Elvis being filmed on the Gold Coast starring Tom Hanks.
“Before that, it was probably not even newsworthy and under the radar.
“Now everyone’s going ‘oh, Gold Coast is an epicentre of filming in Australia’. I always look at it a glass half full.

“Does it mean we will lose contracts for films? Contracts start 18 months out. No one is going to know what sort of film we will be attracting 18 months from now.
“As far as the film industry and short term concerned – yes it will be affected. But that’s the way the world is right now.
“In the long term – we’ll come out of this. And I believe our film industry will go along from strength to strength.”
Cr Tate advised those concerned about voting in the council election amid the coronavirus outbreak to consider pre-polling.
“We need to minimise risk. If there are unnecessary mass meetings, for example voting happening on the 28th of March,” he said.
“The city of Gold Coast have let staff know to take time off and do early voting. If we can reduce the number of people polling on voting day, we can minimise the risk.”
