Gold Coast development: Construction begins on $19.5m Chevron Island green bridge to Evandale

CONSTRUCTION has begun on the $19.5m Chevron Island ‘green bridge’ which will connect with the cultural precinct at HOTA. But the new infrastructure is also set to transform the Island.

THE $19.5 million Chevron Island ‘green bridge’ will take its first pedestrians in October next year.

Construction of the bridge began today when Mayor Tom Tate turned the first sod and once complete it will connect the Island to the Home of the Arts (HOTA) at Evandale.

COUNCIL TO PUSH AHEAD WITH BRIDGE AND $60M ART GALLERY

The 5m-wide, 130m bridge is the first piece of the $80m stage 2 works of the cultural precinct, which will be followed in March by construction of the $60.5m art gallery.

Cr Tate said the infrastructure would help bring more people between the island and the arts precinct.

GAMES TO LEAVE $30B DEVELOPMENT LEGACY

“We will have it done this time next year,” he said.

“I foresee that this will be a selfie heaven and people will take their time to get to HOTA itself.

“Now that this has started, my attention will be on the council’s carpark on Chevron Island - we should look at it and activate it as a joint-venture project.

“You will have underground carparking plus retail so people can go there, enjoy fine dining and then walk over to enjoy a show at HOTA.”

The construction of the bridge will employ 45 people.

It will be open to cyclists and pedestrians and will be high enough to allow vessels to pass underneath, having a 4.8m clearance.
