UPDATE: GOLD Coast surfing champ Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew has survived a snake bite and been discharged from hospital.

The 1978 World Champion is recovering at home after being discharged from Tweed hospital earlier today.

In an update to his Instagram followers he said: “Final blood test clear of venom, nothing but a sore ankle and a freaky reptilian encounter”.

Speaking to the Bulletin on Friday, Mr Bartholomew said he was left with a sore ankle and tingles in his leg.

“But that’s it, caught a lucky break,” he said.

EARLIER: SURFING legend Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew has been hospitalised after being bitten by a snake earlier today.

Posting to Instagram this afternoon, the former world champ said he was “hanging out in hospital” after being bitten by an unknown reptile.
Alongside an image of a bandaged leg he wrote to his more than 9,000 followers: “ … waiting to see if it was a deadly snake or a non-venomous one or maybe a juvenile snake that did not inject its venom. In Australia they treat it as a worst-case scenario. May the odds be always with me.”

Among the hundreds comments left on the post, surfing greats sent well wishes and Mercedes Corby, the sister of convicted Bali drug smuggler Schapelle, who told Mr Bartholomew “ … hope its good news when tests back. Get well soon.”

Speaking to the Bulletin from his hospital bed, Mr Bartholomew said he was in the sand dunes at Currumbin when believed he was bitten by a snake.

He said it was also possible the suspected snake had taken cover from bad weather under his car and bit him as he was getting into the vehicle.
“My foot is swollen and numb but it has been five hours now and I feel OK,” he said.

“It may have been what they call a dry bite, I didn’t see it in the sand dunes but saw the blood and puncture marks.”

He said he would be treated in hospital across the next 12 hours, having blood tests every two hours.

“So far so good,” Mr Bartholomew said.
