CAIRNS Airport is expected to experience its busiest day in over two years since the beginning of the pandemic because of the amount of domestic travellers coming to Cairns for Easter.

Cairns Airport CEO Richard Barker said he was excited to see the airport and region buzzing with lots of visitors.

“Today we’re expecting our busiest day in over two years, with over 14,000 domestic passengers expected to travel through the airport,” Mr Barker said.

“After a challenging two years for the airport and tourism sector, it’s great to see confidence in travel is returning.”

Over the Easter school holidays for Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria the airport is expecting more than 280K passengers through the domestic terminal.

“This April is the first time we are expecting to exceed 300K domestic passengers in any month since the pandemic struck,” he said.

He said over the Easter weekend he encouraged people to allow extra travel time if you are flying out of Cairns Airport.

Mr Barker said the airport had put extra measures in place during the busy period like extra security staff, cleaning staff and airport volunteers.

“Aussies have found their mojo and they found international holidays in their own backyard and in Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef,” Tropical Tourism North Queensland CEO Mark Olsen said.

“A quiet January and February, and a slow but steady March. April is looking fantastic. We are seeing record domestic numbers coming in, in April.”
