TODAY’S NEWS

Car damages house, Manunda

Two people are in custody after fleeing the scene when a stolen vehicle rolled and caused damage to a Far North house.

Queensland Police arrived at Cominos Place in Manunda at 6.40pm after a car rolled into a property.

The vehicle, a Toyota Fortuner Station, was a stolen car as two people fled the scene when it made contact with the house.

Police tracked down the alleged offenders and have taken them into custody.

Traffic crash Kuranda

UPDATE: Paramedics have assessed two patients after a serious crash closed the Kuranda Range for about an hour.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said the two men were assessed by officers. One man was taken to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries while the other declined transport.

The crash occurred about one kilometre above the Henry Ross Lookout. The road has reopened after emergency crews cleaned a fuel spill and towed the trailer attached the truck.

EARLIER: Emergency services are rushing to reports a truck has gone down an embankment on the Kuranda Range about one kilometre above the Henry Ross Lookout.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency spokeswoman said two fire trucks were on the way to the scene of a crash but there had been reports it was leaking fuel.

She said all the people were reported to be out of the vehicle.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said they were also on the way and had received the call about 8.55am.

The road has closed and delays are expected.

THURSDAY’S NEWS

Cannabis seizure, Mount Garnett

A 43-year-old Silver Valley woman has been charged with $400,000 worth of cannabis at a Far North address.

Police attended a property on Kennedy highway near Silver Valley, in relation to another matter around 10am on Wednesday August 31, where they allegedly located large amounts of cannabis drying on a table in the yard.

Officers then located more cannabis drying in a nearby shed.

Approximately 300 plants ranging from seedlings to metres long plants and thousands more cannabis seeds were found by Mt Garnet Police after a further search of the property.

The 43-year-old woman was arrested and charged with one count each of producing and possessing a dangerous drug (in excess of schedule 3).

She was granted police bail and will appear in Atherton Magistrates Court on Tuesday September 20.

Investigations are ongoing.

Multi-vehicle crash, Brinsmead

UPDATE 4.30PM: Lucky motorists have managed to avoid serious injury after a five car pileup on major Far North road.

Queensland Police confirmed they were able to remove everyone from the vehicles, with one being quite badly damaged at the Brinsmead address.

One patient was taken to Cairns Hospital in stable condition with some chest pains by Queensland Ambulance Service.

The road was cleared at 4.20pm.

EARLIER 3.30PM: A multi-vehicle crash has left a pileup on a busy Far North road as emergency services rush to the scene.

Queensland Police, Queensland Ambulance Service and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services are all on scene after residents reported a multi-vehicle crash on the Cairns Western Arterial Road in Brinsmead at 3.30pm.

A Redlynch resident reported hearing a loud noise followed by black smoke and debris hitting the road.

“There were either four or five cars involved,” he said.

“The cars were wedged, the guy at the front and back (of the pile up) got out but the others were in bit of a shock.

“It’s just lucky on that section there’s two lanes … it looks like traffic is coming out slowly.”

Two QFES crews are heading towards the scene with another on its way.

Queensland Ambulance said no serious injuries have been reported.

WEDNESDAY’S NEWS

Kuranda – single-vehicle crash

Paramedics attended a single-vehicle crash reported on the Captain Cook Highway at 1.42am. A male in their 30s sustained minor injuries and was transported in a stable condition to Cairns Hospital.

Drug and stealing charges

A 26-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences after reportedly being observed stealing from a Cairns City business on Monday, August 29.

It will be alleged about 4.30pm the man entered a Lake St shop, and filled a basket with

groceries before walking out without paying.

The man was spotted by a member of the public fleeing the store, who alerted nearby police.

As police approached the man, he fled the scene and left the groceries behind.

The man was later located on Spence St and again ran from police before being arrested.

A search of the man was conducted, and officers located restricted prescription drugs that were not his.

The 26-year-old man was charged with one count each of stealing, offence to possess S4 or S8 medicines or hazardous poisons and possess utensils.

He is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

MONDAY’S NEWS

Cairns CBD – serious head injury

A man has been flown to Townsville Hospital from Cairns Base Hospital in a critical condition.

QAS responded to reports of a man in his 30s who suffered a serious head injury from a fall at an address on Grafton St in Cairns CBD about 3am on Sunday morning.

QAS transported the 38-year-old man, who was in a serious condition, to Cairns Base Hospital.

He was then flown to Townsville Hospital where he is currently being treated.

A Townsville Hospital spokeswoman described his condition as critical but stable.

Belvedere – house fire

EMERGENCY services crews remain at the scene of a double-storey house fire that has forced the internal collapse of the property.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services were called to a Bella Vista Ave property about 2.30am, Monday and contained the fire by about 3.30am with four crews.

Queensland Police and Ambulance crews also attended the scene.

A QFES spokesman said there were no occupants in the house and it was fully extinguished by about 4.30am.

He said the property was concrete structure on the bottom floor and timber on the upper level with the latter collapsing internally.

“It appears the fire started in the garage, there were a few gas bottles in there,” the spokesman said.

At 7.30am he said one fire crew was still at the scene. The cause is not yet known.

Parramatta Park – two-vehicle crash

A man in his 30s was transported to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition with back pain following a two-vehicle crash on Upward Street and Severin Street at 5.30am.

Cairns North – two-vehicle crash

Two stable patients, a male with a head injury and a female with no obvious injuries, were transported to Cairns Hospital following a two-vehicle crash on Sheridan Street at 6.35pm.

Major intersection upgrade at East Feluga Road and Bruce Hwy. Delays are expected to August 12, 2022.

Wrights Creek Road is closed to all traffic. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route.
