GLOOMY weather is promised for the Far North region after a wet few days set the tone for the week ahead — but a brighter weekend may be on the horizon.

Far Northerners like Jack Wilson and four-legged friend Bull were armed with an umbrella as showers dampened activities and events across the region, including the Cairns Festival.

The festival was forced to cancel Superfamous, a performance by Queensland Symphony Orchestra at Munro Martin Parklands on Sunday evening, which Cairns Regional Council said was due to “inclement weather and the impact it will have on musicians and their instruments”.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Felim Hanniffy said grey clouds will remain in the week ahead while showers slowly ease starting Monday and will be “few and far between” by the end of the week.

Temperatures for Monday will top 28 degrees with minimums of 22 in Cairns.

“Showers are never too far away,” he said.

“There’ll be warm nights with day time maxes a little bit subdued by (the high pressure system in the Tasman Sea and trough in the northern Coral Sea).

“But towards the weekend, we’ll see brighter weather returning.”
