Supermarket giant Aldi has responded to speculation of a long-awaited move to the Far North following the announcement of a new north Queensland store this week.

Willows shopping centre in Townsville successfully lured the German-owned discount grocery giant north, which sparked vigorous debate about whether Cairns could be the next location for an Aldi outlet.

Aldi has long been coveted by Cairns shoppers wanting access to its discount goods and trademark “special buys” which can change from month to month to include products as diverse as alpine hiking gear and guitar pedals to gym equipment and money boxes filled with jelly beans.

The new Townsville store will be the only Queensland outlet to set up north of Rockhampton.

The Cairns Post approached Aldi off the back of enthusiasm generated by news of the Townsville store announcement and asked if there were plans to open in Cairns – but the company had none to share.

Aldi topped a reader poll in 2018 as the shop Cairns Post readers would most like to see open in Far North Queensland, followed Swedish flatpack furniture monolith Ikea and fashion retailer H&M.
