The German supermarket giant has long been coveted by Cairns shoppers wanting access to its discount goods and trademark centre-aisle specials, which can change from month to month to include products as diverse as ski gear and guitar pedals to gym equipment and power tools.

An advertisement posted to Facebook Jobs has been causing confusion with an offer of 367 jobs touted for Cairns with wages ranging from $25-$30 an hour.

“Would you like to work at ALDI?” the advertisement begins.

“The well-known chain of stores, which operates in large retail, is looking for different numbers for hiring at points of sale and in person. Here are the ongoing selections and how to apply for job offers.”

Jobs ranged from store assistants, night-time shelf stocking and managerial positions – but all is not what it seems.

An Aldi Australia spokeswoman said the company was not associated with any of the job advertisements.

“We will always consider the feasibility of new locations however at this stage, ALDI has no plans to open stores in North Queensland,” she said.

The advertisements appear to have been removed from Facebook since the Cairns Post approached Aldi about them.

The truth will come as a blow to a lot of shoppers who have been waiting years for Aldi to finally announce a northern incursion.

Aldi topped a reader poll in 2018 as the shop Cairns Post readers would most like to see open in Far North Queensland, followed Swedish flatpack furniture monolith Ikea and fashion retailer H&M.

Three years on, not one of the three top shops has come to Cairns.
