Spectacular car fire on Smithfield bypass

Traffic came to a standstill as emergency services worked quickly to extinguish a sports car on fire on a key motorway in Cairns today. SEE THE VIDEO

Smithfield Bypass car on fire

Traffic was delayed on the Smithfield bypass after someone’s pride and joy - a red sports car - caught alight.

A Queensland police spokeswoman said a call was received at 2.11pm and QFES extinguished the fire by 2.30pm.

She said there were no report of injuries.

A QFES spokeswoman said the car was ablaze near Yorkeys Knob.

She said the driver declined an offer of assistance an it appeared nobody was injured.

The cause of the startling blaze is unkown at this stage.

The Smithfield Bypass is a 4km road extending from the Captain Cook Highway and Cairns Western Arterial Rd intersection to the McGregor Rd roundabout.
