Wilson Nathaniel, 21, shot by police in Cairns, released from hospital

A Cairns man who was shot in the face by a police officer during an incident in Far North Queensland has been released after receiving treatment across 10 days.

A Manunda man who was shot in the face by a police officer during an incident in Woree last month has been released after receiving treatment across 10 days at Cairns Hospital.

Wilson Nathaniel was charged with dozens of serious offences after police were called to a Bungalow address following reports of a woman in distress on Wednesday, March 27.

During the incident, Nathaniel allegedly damaged a police vehicle and threatened officers with multiple weapons.

It will be further alleged that he then stole a police vehicle and drove it to Woree before officers intercepted the vehicle on Sondrio St.

Nathaniel was shot and then taken to Cairns Hospital where he received medical treatment.

In a statement police confirmed Nathaniel had left hospital on Friday.

“A 21-year-old Manunda man has been released from hospital into custody and is due to reappear at Cairns Magistrates Court on April 19,” a police spokeswoman said.

“No additional charges have been laid.”

Nathaniel’s matter was heard in court prior to the weekend but he was not required to appear as he recovered from his gunshot wound.

Nathaniel has been charged with four counts of rape, three counts each of assault with intent to commit rape, one count each of enter dwelling and commit, enter premises and commit indictable offence, enter premises with intent to commit indictable offence, and attempted enter premises with intent to commit indictable offence in relation to the alleged incidents involving a woman in her 40s at Bungalow.

He has also been charged with seven counts of serious assault police officer whilst armed with a weapon, four counts of wilful damage of police property, four counts each of threatening violence, serious assault police officer causing bodily harm whilst armed with a weapon and one count each of stealing, dangerous operation of a vehicle, driving of motor vehicle without a driver's licence, evasion offence, wilful damage and unlawful use of motor vehicle.
