The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting “another round” of rain and storm as a monsoonal trough could cause flooding across Far North Queensland.
Senior meteorologist Dean Narramore said there has been widespread continued rainfall across north and central Queensland over the past 24 hours with falls ranging from 50-150mm for sites across the region.
“We have seen widespread shower and storm activity right across northern Australia from the Kimberly, The Gulf and peninsular across much of Queensland which is likely to continue across the coming days,” he said.
Mr Narramore said the wet weather could continue to ramp up into the weekend with the development of monsoonal activity.
“We could finally start to see monsoonal conditions develop across the top end.”
He said we are likely to see “another round” of showers rain and thunderstorms develop through parts of Northern Queensland which could drop another 50-150mm with higher isolated falls.
“Over the next three to four days we could see widespread falls of around 100-200mm across Northern Queensland with 200-300mm possible from Ayr to around the Tully area, which is obviously not great news for areas already experiencing severe flooding and heavy rainfall around the last week or so.”
Mr Narramore said there were still a lot of flood warnings active across the state.
“Flood watches are current for a number of rivers in The Gulf including the Cloncurry, the Lower Flinders, the Gilbert and the Norman River,” he said.
Parts of the gulf have recorded extensive falls in the last 24 hours with recording stations around Normanton recording over 100mm.
Flood waters have cut the Burke Developmental Road at multiple locations including the Gilbert River to Dunbar Station, the Lynd River, Trimbles crossing, and the Walsh River Fergusons Crossing.
“We have moderate warnings for the Flinders and we have major flooding ongoing in parts of the Tully River and the Herbert River,” Mr Narramore said.
“With further rain forecast we could see river levels rising again on these rivers catchments and streams.”
Minor flooding is occurring along the Tully River with renewed rises to the moderate flood level possible during Saturday.
Major flooding may be occurring in the Murray River.
The Tully River at Euramo is currently at 7.05 metres and slowly falling, above the minor flood level (6.00m).
Renewed rises to the moderate flood level (8m) are possible along the Tully River at Euramo during Saturday, with forecast rainfall.
