Mossman detectives have charged a man with the torching of a converted retail premises on the main street of a historic Far North mining town.
A crime scene was declared and an investigation got underway last Wednesday after the old butcher’s shop building at Mount Molloy was destroyed in a fire.
Emergency services were called to a Main Street address at 5.10pm on April 23 following reports the house was fully engulfed by flames.
A Queensland Fire Department spokesman at the time said the building was well-involved- when crews arrived on scene.
“We sent five crews, four fire and rescue and a back up from the rural fire service for water,” the spokesman said.
“It took a while for crews to get it under control and we were around for quite a while after that.
“We had reports there wasn’t anyone inside, but crews were unable to do a search because of the level of damage.”
Later police confirmed all occupants were evacuated and no one was physically injured during the incident.
A day after the blaze detectives charged a 35-year-old Miallo man with arson.
Police alleged the 35-year-old Miallo man set fire to the property.
On April 24, Mossman detectives located the man on a Miallo property where he was arrested and taken to Mareeba police station.
The man was charged with one count of arson and is due to attend the Mareeba Magistrates Court on May 12. Any witnesses or anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam vision is urged to contact police.
