Man charged with violent attack outside Cape medical centre

An injured man has been flown to Cairns for urgent medical treatment after allegedly being attacked with a weapon outside a Cape York health facility.

An injured man has been flown to Cairns for medical treatment after allegedly being attacked with a weapon outside a Cooktown health facility.

Just after 4am on Thursday police were called to the Cooktown Multipurpose Health Service in response to reports that a 26-year-old man had sought medical assistance for serious injuries.

Police allege an altercation kicked off between two men who known to each other on the street outside the Hope St medical centre before the confrontation escalated and one man was attacked with an unknown weapon.

Police declined to reveal what kind of weapon was used or the nature of the man’s injuries.

The injured man was flown to Cairns Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Officers were called to the main Cooktown health service building that also serves as the town’s emergency department and arrested a 24-year-old man.

Police later charged the 24-year-old man in relation to the wounding incident.

The man was charged with one count of grievous bodily harm domestic violence offence.

The man is due to appear in the Cooktown Magistrates Court on March 31.

Investigations are ongoing, anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Further north in Weipa police are appealing for information following multiple wilful damage and stealing complaints from the Weipa Airport carpark.

Police allege between midnight and 5am on Thursday March 13, three vehicles parked in the airport carpark were damaged before property was stolen from the vehicles.

One vehicle had a side window smashed and the car appeared to have been rummaged through and left unlocked.

Another had the soft cover pulled up on the rear tray, and the third had the toolbox tampered with.

Police are appealing for public assistance and believe the person pictured below may be able to assist with inquiries.

The incident follows an investigation into two men who were caught on camera stealing tools, machinery and chemicals from the airport in November last year.
