A NEW owner and location for the controversial statue of Captain James Cook is currently being canvassed with all offers for the divisive figure on the table.
James Cook University is calling on submissions from anyone interested in acquiring the larger-than-life figure which must make way for the construction of the new hospital precinct.
The towering statue has been standing on Sheridan St for almost 50 years, originally placed as an advertising gimmick to draw attention to the Captain Cook Motel.
JCU’s Cairns Director, Dr David Craig, said the formal process of considering proposals for removal of the statue “to an appropriate location” is expected to be completed early next year.
A petition to have the statue knocked down attracted more than 10,000 signatures when the Black Lives Matter movement was at its height last year.
Beyond simply the divisive figure it represented and his part in Australia’s colonial history, petitioners argued it was a slap in the face to have such a large statue of someone who appeared to be doing a “Nazi salute”.
Dr Craig said the statue’s removal would make way for the Cairns Tropical Enterprise Centre, which will accommodate teaching and research in medicine, nursing, allied health and related areas.
“This development will free up space in Cairns Hospital, and will support growing research collaboration between JCU and Hospital staff,” he said.
“It is an important step towards Cairns Hospital achieving University Hospital status.”
