A Parramatta Park road has ranked #1 on RACQ’s list of Worst Intersections in Queensland, following a series of dangerous crashes and casualties that have drawn attention to the site.
The Florence Street and Mulgrave Road notorious five-way intersection has been the scene of nine crashes and 18 casualties in the past three years according to data collected by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
The ranking follows the installation of a fixed speed camera and red light camera at the same intersection six months ago.
Senior Sergeant Craig Johnson of the Cairns Highway Patrol said police are not consulted as to where cameras are placed on the roads, but was grateful for the added help nonetheless.
“Any extra tool to reduce road trauma is welcomed by the QPS,” he said.
RACQ Head of Public Policy Susan Furze said it is extremely concerning to see a number of crashes occur in the same location.
“A common issue with intersections such as Florence and Mulgrave is they are tricky to safely navigate and are often heavily congested, which can prove to be a dangerous combination for drivers,” she said.
Manager of the BP service station at the intersection Sid Mair said there’s been bad crashes on the road recently.
“I’m not sure the speed camera is making much difference, I didn’t know it was there so I’m wondering how many others know,” he said.
“It’s a busy intersection and people aren’t as careful as they should be, I’ve seen a few crashes and I’ve only lived here for a few months.”
Cairns Police Senior Constable Martin Shephard said it would only be speculation to give reason as to why traffic accidents occur at any time and place.
“While we can’t say what causes accidents at the intersection, we ask people to remember and abide by the fatal five,” he said.
THE FATAL FIVE
1. Don’t drink and / or drug drive
2. Don’t Speed
3. Wear a seatbelt
4. Don’t be distracted
5. Don’t drive if fatigued
