Tablelands and Mareeba residents without power after severe storm

Severe weather in the Far North has cut power supply and left more than 1000 homes in the dark.

More than 1000 residents in Far North Queensland are without power today after a 17-metre tall power pole and major powerlines were brought down during a storm near Dimbulah last night.

Ergon Energy is working to restore power to customers in Almaden, Arriga, Chillagoe, Dimbulah, Fumar, Koorboora, Leafgold, Mutchilba, Petford, Price Creek and Solanum.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall were recorded in the area around 11.46pm.

“They also had quite active lightning but no significant wind gusts were recorded,” a BoM spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman said more showers were expected with the possibility of thunderstorms for Far North Queensland, however they were unlikely to be severe if they develop.

“For the rest of the week, we will see similar showery conditions, with the possibility of severe weather returning to the Far North Queensland region including Cairns on Thursday as the trough continues to shift eastwards towards the coast,” the spokeswoman said.

Earlier it was reported more than 1200 people east of Cairns could be without power until this afternoon, due to a power outage impacting Dimbulah and Chillagoe due to severe weather.

Ergon Energy is working towards restoring the issue but some may be without power supply until this afternoon.

Ergon will have a helicopter flying along the main feeder lines early this morning to help pinpoint the site of the fault.

“We would like to thank customers in this area for their patience and we will provide updates on this outage when possible,” an Ergon Energy spokesperson said.
