A gunman wanted for the shooting of another man at a remote Far North property has been taken into custody after siege and protracted negotiations with police.

The gunman was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon.

At 11.45am 68-year-old man was arrested following an incident in Silver Valley on Tuesday night.

Police allege at 9.30pm on Tuesday a 44-year-old Silver Valley man attended a Shady Creek Road address and became involved in an altercation with a 68-year-old man.

Police allege the two men were known to each other.

During the altercation the 44-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and calf.

The injured man drove home before calling police.

Emergency services then rushed to the man’s home after receiving a call for help.

The man was driven by ambulance to Mareeba Airport before being flown to Cairns Hospital for surgery, a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said.

“Around 9.30pm, emergency services were called to the residence of a 44-year-old man who had sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen and calf,” she said.

“Initial investigations by police indicate the man had sustained the injuries after an altercation with a man known to him at another address.”

He is now in a serious but stable condition.

It’s understood police were considering activating a PSPA exclusion zone surrounding the Sliver Valley property where the gunman was held up.

However, following protracted negotiations with police, the 68-year-old man was taken into custody at a Shady Creek Road property just before midday without incident.
