A Far North Queensland butcher has created Australia’s best burger, winning first place at the national meat industry awards.

Edge Hill Butchery owners Rod and Julie Leaver took home the title of Nation’s Best Burger at the Australian Meat Industry Council national awards on February 24 for their gourmet lamb and halloumi burger.

Ms Leaver said their win was down to their Greek inspired flavour combo.

“I believe that’s what gave us the upper hand,” Ms Leaver said.

“The judges said the halloumi gave it great texture and made it puff up nicely.

“And lamb is one of those proteins that everyone eats, it’s popular in almost all countries and cultural groups which is why we chose it,” she said.

The couple flew down to the Sunshine Coast with their creation where a team of professional chefs cooked the patty to perfection and presented it to a panel of judges.

“A lot goes into it, there is a fair bit of pride at stake, you want to showcase your region and your state,” Ms Leaver said.

Mr Leaver said the win had been years in the making.

“We’re absolutely thrilled and humbled by this incredible recognition,” Mr Leaver said.

“This award is the culmination of years of hard work, a relentless pursuit of excellence, and a passion for creating a product that not only tastes great but also represents the best of what Australia has to offer.”

The award-winning burger is available to try at the Edge Hill Butchery on Collins Ave.
