An alleged young offender charged in relation to a stolen performance car seen doing burnouts through the streets of Cairns has been released on bail.

An alleged young offender charged in relation to a stolen performance car seen doing burnouts through the streets of Cairns has been released on bail.

During a brief hearing in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Thursday, 21-year-old Louis Kris successfully applied for bail after being charged with one count each of unlawful use of vehicle and receiving tainted property.

Mr Kris will next front court on September 4 for sentence.

Earlier on Wednesday the hunt for a stolen American muscle car came to a dramatic end after running amok through the streets, doing burnouts and putting innocent lives at risk.

Members of the public boxed in the stolen Mustang until police arrived, after the vehicle was seen tearing through Cairns streets, driving dangerously and doing burnouts amid a significant spike in stolen vehicles.

The red Ford Mustang was stolen from Mission Rd on Wednesday at about 6.30am before an alleged juvenile behind the wheel was caught on video hurtling up a street in Mooroobool with thick white smoke trailing out from behind the vehicle.

It’s understood a civilian spotted the vehicle near Shang Park in Mooroobool before following the car to the corner of David St and Chaplain Ave in Manunda.

The alleged stolen car reversed into a white Toyota HiLux before being boxed in by a second four-wheel-drive.

Police stated the car came to a stop after the road was obstructed by other vehicles, and the occupants fled on foot.

Three alleged offenders, a 15-year-old boy, a 16-year-old boy, and 21-year-old Louis Kris were quickly taken into custody.

“It will be alleged the vehicle was seen driving dangerously across Cairns, before it was located damaged at David Street around 12.20pm,” a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said.

Police allege the 16-year-old driver of the Mustang was also involved in breaking into a Kenneth Street in Bayview Heights after stealing the Ford from White Rock.

The driver was also stole a vehicle from an Edmonton address among other offences in the previous week, police have alleged.

He has been charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle with prior conviction, two counts of unlawful use of motor vehicle, two counts of possess tainted property, two counts of obstruct police, and one count each of enter dwelling, stealing, driving unlicensed repeat offender, and possess dangerous drugs.

He has been refused bail and appeared before Cairns Childrens Court on August 8.

The 15-year-old boy has been charged with two counts of enter dwelling, and one count each of unlawful use of vehicle, receiving tainted property, and possessing dangerous drugs.

In a separate incident, one family had two cars stolen from their Brinsmead address after alleged offenders snuck into the house after arriving at the address in a stolen car.

The group allegedly made off with a Subaru XV and a company vehicle branded with Busy Schools logos.

On Monday, 11 vehicles had been stolen in the Cairns area but overnight on Tuesday it’s understood up to six vehicles were stolen in one night.

Last month a total of 61 vehicles were stolen and as of Monday the 2024 tally sat at 413.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said investigations were ongoing into the theft of the Mustang.
