THE Gold Coast has marked its first post-COVID Boxing Day with heavy traffic delays, lines 500-people long and record spending across the state.
Photos revealed thousands packing shopping centres across the city including Harbour Town in Biggera Waters and Robina Town Centre.
Robina Town Centre’s general manager Kathleen Hart said the Boxing Day sales were “proving to be just as popular” as the pre-Christmas period.
“The lead-up to Christmas saw strong customer traffic, and feedback from our retailers suggests the Boxing Day sales period is proving to be just as popular,” she said.
Meanwhile at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre motorists were warned of long delays on streets surrounding the centre as early as 8am.
Brisbane local Bella McArthur, 20, said she was surprised by the number of people.
“It’s crazy, we came at about 8.30am and there was already a crowd,” she said.
“I came specifically for Tommy Hilfiger and all the girl’s stores, clothing, shoes. Last year was less busy.”
The centre’s general manager Shaine Beveridge said: For the busy period we increased security and cleaning staff on site and are working with authorities to ensure the safety of our shoppers.
“We have found that all our customers and staff are continuously following our social distancing and hygiene guidelines.”
