BFL: Barwon Heads dominate against Geelong Amateur in round 3

There’s no such thing as a premiership hangover, according to Barwon Heads. The defending champs have started the year perfectly, and one co-coach thinks they’re only getting better.

Barwon Heads co-coach Mitch Herbison believes the Seagulls are not a finished product yet despite three convincing wins to open their premiership defence.

The Seagulls smashed Geelong Amateur in the second half of the round 3 contest between the two finals contenders, kicking 11 goals to one after half time to win 16.21 (117) to 3.6 (24).

Herbison said his group was “lucky” to get the Ammos on a day off, with the premiership player expecting them to be fierce competition come finals.

“I think they had a bit of a bad day to be honest, we probably had one of those days where everything fell our way,” he said.

“We got a lot going our way early, the boys were really good for four quarters which was pleasing the wet weather made the game a little bit scrappy but we adjusted pretty well.

“There’s always things to work on, last week we felt like there were still some things we needed to do in the midfield and centre bounces which we cleaned up a bit, but there’s always stuff to improve on.”

Star ruck Luke Davis was one of Barwon Heads’ best players, giving his midfield brigade first use in the centre square and around the ground.

Herbison said Davis was stellar.

“That was easily Luke’s best game of the year in the ruck, he gave us really great use throughout the day which was obviously really important,” he said.

“His work rate meant we could take territory away from Ammos, so he worked really hard throughout the week and so did the boys, and their hard work came to fruition.

“I think the boys that have come in have slotted in and played well so far, they’re not only good footballers but also great people and they are fitting in really well.

“That’s translating to some good footy on the park.”
