A RARE painting worth tens of thousands of dollars has been discovered in a Gold Coast home.

The 100-year-old Norman Lindsay painting was brought into Paradise Point’s Grace Galleries after years spent hanging in the previous owner’s kitchen.

Gallery owner Rodney Overton said he believed the owner had bought the painting at a Brisbane gallery some years before.

“It had been in their kitchen and hadn’t been sighted for years,” he said.

“Norm Lindsay’s paintings are quite rare. He did lots of etchings but his paintings, particularly larger ones, are quite scarce.

“Somebody walked through the door with it. We get 10 or 20 people a day with stuff for sale but every now and then you get a real treasure.”

It is being sold for $35,000.

Australian artist Lindsay, who died in 1969, was one of the most prolific and popular artists of his time.

His home now serves as a gallery for his work but nearby bushfires have forced it to close until further notice.

It isn’t the first time Grace Galleries has uncovered a rare gem.

At their previous Runaway Bay location in 2018 a mirror believed to have once been Queen Victoria’s was handed in by a local after more than a century out of the public eye.

The 30kg mirror, featuring Victoria’s royal sigil, was valued at several thousand dollars.

HOW TO SNAG RARE ANTIQUES ON COAST

In 2014 a telescope once owned by England’s most famous naval hero was put up for auction by the gallery after a Queensland family decided to part with it.

The telescope was specially designed for the one-armed and one-eyed Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson, with Mr Overton dubbing it “one of the most significant maritime finds of the era”.
