The Garden City Mosque was the epicentre for Toowoomba’s celebration of diversity of faiths, ethnicities and cultures on Saturday, as part of the Islamic Society of Toowoomba’s annual International Food Festival and Mosque Open Day.
The event, now in its 12th year, saw a record-breaking 2000 people come and enjoy a huge variety of food stalls, guest speakers, children’s activities and other attractions.
Islamic Society president and University of Southern Queensland Associate Professor Mainul Islam said food, dance and culture from more than a dozen countries were on display, including Australia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Iraq and Bosnia.
“This event is more than sharing of delicious food and our vibrant cultures – it is a remembrance of our shared humanity,” he said.
“It is a reflection of what is possible when people of different backgrounds, beliefs, and traditions come together in friendship and harmony.”
Guest speakers included state minister for multiculturalism Fiona Simpson, Toowoomba mayor Geoff McDonald, Toowoomba North MP Trevor Watts, Multicultural Australia chief executive Christine Castley and Australian Federation of Islamic Councils president Dr Rateb Jneid.
